How does the FPV system transmit video? That's a question I get asked a lot, especially since I'm a supplier of fiber optic FPV drones. FPV, or First Person View, is a game-changer in the drone world. It lets you experience the flight from the drone's perspective, like you're sitting right in the cockpit. So, let's dig into how this cool tech works.
The Basics of FPV Video Transmission
At its core, an FPV system has two main parts: the transmitter on the drone and the receiver on the ground. The transmitter takes the video signal from the drone's camera and sends it out into the wild, while the receiver catches that signal and sends it to your goggles or monitor.
There are a few different ways to send that video signal, but the most common ones are radio waves and, in our case, fiber optic cables. Radio wave-based transmission is super popular because it's wireless and gives you a good amount of range. But it also has its downsides, like interference from other devices and a limited bandwidth.
Radio Wave Transmission
Radio wave FPV systems usually operate on specific frequency bands, like 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz. The 2.4GHz band has a longer range but less bandwidth, which can lead to a bit of a laggy video feed. On the other hand, the 5.8GHz band has a shorter range but more bandwidth, so you get a clearer and smoother video.
The transmitter on the drone modulates the video signal onto the radio waves. Modulation is like putting the video signal on a carrier wave, so it can travel through the air. There are different types of modulation, but the most common ones are Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM). Once the signal is modulated, it's sent out through the transmitter's antenna.
On the ground, the receiver's antenna picks up the radio waves. The receiver then demodulates the signal, which is basically taking the video signal off the carrier wave and turning it back into a usable video. Finally, the demodulated video signal is sent to your goggles or monitor, and you get to see what the drone sees.
Fiber Optic Transmission
Now, let's talk about fiber optic FPV systems, which is what we specialize in. Fiber optic cables use light to transmit data, and they have some major advantages over radio waves. First of all, they offer a much higher bandwidth, which means you can get a super clear and high-resolution video feed. There's also no interference from other devices, so you don't have to worry about your video signal getting messed up.
In a fiber optic FPV system, the video signal from the drone's camera is first converted into a light signal. This is done using a device called a transmitter, which uses lasers or LEDs to turn the electrical video signal into light. The light signal then travels through the fiber optic cable, which is made of super-thin strands of glass or plastic.
The great thing about fiber optic cables is that they can carry a lot of data over long distances without losing much signal strength. This means you can get a high-quality video feed even if your drone is flying far away.
On the ground, the light signal is converted back into an electrical video signal using a receiver. This receiver uses a photodetector to detect the light signal and convert it into an electrical current. The electrical current is then processed and sent to your goggles or monitor.

And if you're looking for a great pair of goggles, check out our Digital Goggles FPV. These goggles are designed to work seamlessly with our fiber optic FPV drones, giving you a crystal-clear view of what the drone sees.
Why Choose Fiber Optic FPV?
There are a few reasons why you might want to choose a fiber optic FPV system over a radio wave-based one. First of all, as I mentioned earlier, fiber optic cables offer a much higher bandwidth, which means you get a better quality video feed. This is especially important if you're using your drone for professional applications, like aerial photography or videography.
Secondly, fiber optic transmission is much more reliable. There's no interference from other devices, so you don't have to worry about your video signal getting dropped or distorted. This is a big advantage, especially if you're flying in an area with a lot of radio frequency interference.
Finally, fiber optic cables are much more durable than radio wave antennas. They're less likely to get damaged by weather or physical impact, which means you can use your drone in more challenging environments.
